The Truth about Vitamin E and Heart Disease Risk in Women

This week I'm going to share some information from a recent seminar by Dr. Jeffrey Blumberg of Tufts University. But first let me tell you who Dr. Blumberg is. Dr. Blumberg is a Professor in the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, which is part of the JeanMayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center On Aging at Tufts. Dr. Blumberg has over 200 publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals. He is considered one of the world's top experts on supplementation. And he is on Shaklee's Scientific Advisory Board.

Now back to what I learned at his seminar. Dr. Blumberg's specialty is conducting and analyzing clinical studies, and his perspective on some recent clinical studies is a bit different from what you may have heard from media reports. Over the next several weeks I will be talking about how he believes that the media has seriously misinterpreted several recent studies.

You might call this topic "The Rest Of The Story" because you (and your doctor) definitely did not hear this part of the story in the news. Let's start with vitamin E and the risk ofcardiovascular disease in women. In 2005 the results of the Women's Health Study were published (Lee et al., JAMA, 294:56-65, 2005). This was a major study in which 39,876 women were given either 600 IU of vitamin E every other day or a placebo and followed for 10 years.

The headlines said "Vitamin E Supplements Do Not Reduce Risk Of Cardiovascular Death, Heart Attack And Stroke In Women" That was true if you looked at the total population of women in the study. But Dr. Blumberg pointed out that when you looked at women who were 65 or older in that study vitamin E supplementation caused a:- 24% decrease in cardiovascular deaths- 26% decrease in major cardiovascular events- 21% decrease in venous thromboembolism (blood clots forming in the veins).- and all of these decreases were statistically significant.

That's important because the risk of heart disease in pre-menopausal women is extremely low. It's the over 65 group who have a high risk of heart disease. A subsequent study called the "Women's Antioxidant Cardiovascular Study" looked at the effect of 600 IU of vitamin E every other day on cardiovascular events in 8171 women health professionals (Cook et al, Archives of Internal Medicine, 167:1610-1618, 2007). Once again the headlines said that vitamin E supplementation had no effect on cardiovascular events. But, when the authors looked at those women who already had cardiovascular disease at the beginning of the study (and were, therefore, at high risk of suffering a cardiovascular event during the study) vitamin E supplementation caused a 23% decreased risk of heart attack, stroke and cardiovascular death.

So what the headlines from both studies should have said was: "Vitamin E reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease and cardiovascular deaths in those women at high risk of heart attacks". But, of course, they didn't. Perhaps that doesn't sell enough papers.

Is Taking An Aspirin a Day Good For Your Health?

Another popular myth has been busted! I'm sure that you have heard this one before. Many doctors advise their patients to take a baby aspirin every day to reduce their risk of heart attack. And this recommendation has been repeated so often in the media and in self-help books and web sites that even more people are taking an aspirin every day without even waiting for their doctor to recommend it. Is this good advice?

Probably not, accordingly to a new study done by Dr.Gerry Fowlkes of the Wolfson Unit for Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease in Edinburgh Scotland. In a study that he presented at the most recent meeting of the European Society for Cardiology in BarcelonaSpain he and his colleagues followed 3,000 men at very high risk for developing heart disease for an average of eight years. Half of the group was randomly assigned to take an aspirin every day and the other half was given a placebo.

At the end of eight years there was no difference in the rate of heart attacks or stroke - or risk of death from any cause - between the two groups. In other words, an aspirin a day did not decrease the risk of heart attack and stroke and had no discernable health benefits in this study. Even worse, there were 34 major bleeds in people taking the aspirin compared to only 20 in people taking the placebo. And if you looked at internal bleeding that was so serious that it required hospitalization, the risk was almost double for the aspirin users compared to the placebo users.

The conclusion of this study was that for otherwise healthy people the risks of taking aspirin outweigh the benefits. The scientists cautioned that for people who have already had a heart attack, the benefits of taking an aspirin a day might outweigh the risks. But I would encourage you to investigate natural alternates rather than relying on a drug to reduce your risk of heart disease. For example several recent clinical studies have shown that as little as 500 mg/day of omega-3 fatty acids, whether from fish or from supplements, can reduce the risk of a second heart attack in someone who has already had one heart attack by 30-40%. And, of course, the Landmark study http://www.landmarkstudy.com/ showed that people who have used the Shaklee supplements for 20 years or more have 1/3 the incidence of angina, heart attack, stroke or congestive heart failure as do people using other company's multivitamins or no supplements at all.

Clinical research on health and science...

At Shaklee, scientific research has been a corporate strategy for over 30 years. Their commitment to clinical and scientific research separates Shaklee from the competition and has resulted in over 100 scientific papers—90 of them published in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Their research studies are designed to help advance the state of scientific knowledge in the health and nutritional sciences, and they are a significant component of the Shaklee Difference. Striving to Have a "Healthy Internet Presence"

For some time now I have been aware that the internet is "the way to go"; and since I have an internet business, I knew that I should take steps to be more visible...something I have been reluctant to do. I did start a blog (this one) but never added new posts. I did join LinkedIn on the advice of a friend, but never finished my profile! Everything seemed just too cumbersome and time consuming...I was looking for something quick and simple.

Then I found Twitter..signed up...got hooked. That prompted me to finish my profile on LinkedIn, update my blog and even join FaceBook! I have even taken part in a few webinars and conference calls on the value of the internet for growing your business...but now I am really confused!! Even though I am enjoying my social media experience, I am not really sure how it can help me in my business. It seems I should be developing relationships..but definitely NOT promoting my business or product!

I guess my new job is to discover how this is all going to work. For now, I am just happy to feel connected, productive and happy contributing in some way over the internet. I hope I can help people in some way...with encouragement and useful information...and perhaps at some point, even show them how they can feel better, live longer, save money and experience the freedom of being your own boss and having more time to do the things you love to do.

The Accidental NetWork Marketer

I was walking the beach early this morning with my husband when I began thinking about how I happened to get into NetWork Marketing. Back then I just knew I loved the products. How could a very shy, quiet, introverted person like me end up in a "people" business??!! Well, I can tell you this, it wasn't planned. I found products that I loved, that worked for me and for others, that I was proud of and felt obligated to share with others..and then we started going to local meetings for more information about those products and because we like being around those positive, upbeat people.

When we needed more income and a new car, we thought that maybe I could just talk to more people about these products. I did that, became a sales leaders, earned a car and free trip to San Francisco...but I still didn't tell anyone about the business!!! I did learn to speak at meetings..my love of the products helped me overcome my shyness and nervousness. But it was only after I earned a free trip to Hawaii that I realized what a great business opportunity this was...and that I should be telling others about it....especially after my husband, who is a CPA, said that I was making more money in my little part-time business than many of his tax clients made working full time!

Time to share the business!, which is what I do now. I certainly am not a role model for how to build a network marketing business, but I hope I am an encouragement to others. My business was built accidentally and sometimes reluctantly...but I never quit, and when something didn't work out, I just shifted gears and went in another direction. I was never one to set goals and always worked the business very sporadically, and always part-time..but looking at what I have been able to achieve, I know that if someone comes in and has a vision, sets goals, makes a plan and works that plan consistently..they can achieve so much more than I have...and that makes me very excited about sharing this opportunity to do well by doing good, to be involved in something meaningful and worthwhile, to help change peoples lives and health for the better. Anyone can do it...and do it so much better and faster than I did!!

Financial Wellness is important too...

I've been thinking a lot lately about how blessed I am to have found such a great, meaningful in-home business...where I can make a difference in people's lives and "do well by doing good". I know my life and my health would be a lot different if I had not gotten involved, moved out of my comfort zone and shared what I know with a lot of other people. Here is a great link that explains why I do what I do http://tinyurl.com/dfc4wa. Thank you Barefoot Executive!!

Feeling younger while growing older

I think that one of the ways we can feel younger as we age is to exercise. That may be something many of you find hard to do, but it is so important...even more so as we get older. We all know how healthy it is to do at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise 5 days a week , but working out with light weights and muscle toning is also extremely important. Strong muscles mean strong bones and a better metabolism...which slows down as we age if we don't do something to help boost it (like exercise). Personally, I feel so much better.. more energy, more alive...when I take the time to work out with weights. Start small..I have 3,6,8,10 and 12 pound free weights...and use them to work different muscles. Machines are good too, if you have the room. I have a Total Gym, which I love. I think rebounding (on a mini-trampoline) is very good as well...and fun! So try to up your exercise and see how much better you feel!!

Learning to improve my Blog..

I have signed up for an online course..."31 Days to a Better Blog" project and am looking forward to improving my Blog. If that sounds like something you would be interested in, you can sign up at www.problogger.com. I hope you will join me there...

Want to feel 25 years younger?

Most of us have heard about something called the French paradox, which suggests that even though the French consume a diet high in fat and drink a lot of wine, they have a remarkably low incidence of heart disease, compared with Americans. Most researchers agree that there may be something in the wine that offers protection. Now, even the highly cautious federal guidelines say that moderate consumption of red wine can be beneficial. This substance has been identified by scientists as resveratrol, and it may do more than protect the heart. It could even extend life by preventing a number of age related illnesses. Soon there may be a pill that could give us an extra decade or two of health as we age. This video is about that research...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCBKfqanYX0 The good news is that you don't have to wait for the drug. There is a product now that is all natural and is a revolutionary breakthrough in the fight against cellular aging. One teaspoon a day provides the resveratrol in 100 glasses of red wine and is combined with the super grape to make it 10x more powerful than resveratrol alone in slowing a key mechanism of aging-AGE protein formation. Contact me for information on how you can get started on this safe, all natural, clinically tested product.
